Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. While a small infant, Ford struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. However, she already had her TV debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
